Getting three quotes for lawn care or landscaping work is easy. Telling the difference between them is the hard part, especially when the numbers are close and everyone on the phone sounds equally confident. Price matters, but it is not the only thing that separates a company that shows up reliably and does the work right from one that disappears after the first missed payment or cuts corners once the contract is signed.
Here is what actually distinguishes a landscaping company worth hiring in this area, beyond who quoted the lowest number.
Start With Licensing and Insurance
Ohio does not require a general landscaping license for basic lawn maintenance, but insurance is non-negotiable. Ask for proof of general liability insurance in writing, not just a verbal assurance, before anyone sets foot on your property. If a crew member gets hurt on your lawn or a mower throws a rock through a window, an uninsured company leaves you exposed to that liability, not them.
For work that goes beyond mowing, retaining walls, drainage, tree removal, ask specifically whether that type of work requires a permit in your city, and whether the company pulls permits themselves or expects you to.
Get the Scope in Writing, Not Just a Price
We covered this from the pricing side last week: two quotes with the same number can cover very different amounts of work. Before you compare prices, make sure you are comparing the same scope. Ask for a written estimate that spells out exactly what is included: mowing, edging, trimming, cleanup, and how often the crew comes.
A company that hesitates to put the scope in writing, or that gives you a number over the phone without seeing the property, is worth a second look. Every reputable landscaper we know walks the property before quoting, because pricing accurately requires actually seeing the lot.
Ask Who Actually Shows Up
Some companies send the same crew to your property every visit. Others subcontract out to whoever is available that week, which means the quality and consistency of the work can vary noticeably from one visit to the next. Neither model is automatically wrong, but you should know which one you are getting.
Ask directly: will the same crew come each time, and who do I call if something is missed or done wrong? A company with a clear, direct answer to that question is usually the one that stands behind its work.
Reviews Tell You More Than a Sales Pitch
Star ratings alone do not tell you much. A company with 30 five-star reviews that are all one line long ("great job") tells you less than a company with 10 reviews that mention specifics: showed up on time, fixed a drainage issue, communicated about a schedule change.
Check how recent the reviews are. A glowing set of reviews from three years ago does not tell you much about the crew and management running the company today. And check how the company responds to any negative reviews. A professional, non-defensive response to a bad review is often more telling than the complaint itself.
Red Flags Worth Walking Away From
Quick reference
- Door-to-door solicitation with no local address or established reviews. Legitimate local companies do not need to canvas neighborhoods for work.
- No willingness to provide proof of insurance, or vague answers when asked directly.
- Pressure to sign a long-term contract same-day, before you have had a chance to compare other quotes.
- A price that is significantly lower than every other quote you received with no clear explanation. That gap usually comes from somewhere: skipped steps, uninsured labor, or a bait-and-switch once work starts.
- No clear answer on what happens with scheduling around rain or holidays. That ambiguity tends to show up later as missed visits with no communication.
